Universal could be expanding in a huge way. Earlier this week, news of Comcast purchasing land in the UK and domains registered for Universal Studios Great Britain were revealed by Orlando ParkStop. Universal confirmed the land purchase and potential plans with the Bedford Independent and Sky News. Universal has set up a website explaining the UK Project and sent a letter to local residents.
Comcast purchased the land and could use it for many different purposes, but it’s being targeted for Universal Destination & Experiences. Universal says:
Universal Destinations & Experiences is in the very early stages of exploring the possibility of a potential park and resort experience in Bedford, England. Whilst our parent company, Comcast Corporation, has purchased a parcel of land near Bedford, we are only at the beginning of our feasibility study as part of our evaluation of potential sites. It may well therefore be many months before we decide whether this potential project will proceed.
Universal is currently planning the Universal Kids Resort for Frisco, Texas and Universal Horror Unleashed in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the FAQ section of the website, Universal specifically says resort and park experience meaning this could be on a similar level to one of the other five resort complexes across the globe rather than a small experience on the scale of Universal Horror Unleashed. Universal says it will be many months before they make a decision on whether to proceed and if they do they will secure all relevant approvals and consult with local communities. Given Comcast’s interest in expanding Universal Destinations & Experiences as well as having a massive fan base of United Kingdom visitors to the Orlando resort, it seems likely that some sort of resort will come to fruition.
Here is the letter sent to residents about the project:
