This past weekend, Sunday to be precise, Volcano Bay had to close early after several guests began to report that they felt shocks or other sensations while in the parks and this was also confirmed by some of the lifeguards.

According to a statement from Universal Orlando, “Our medical staff asked each guest if they wanted to go to the hospital. All said no. A small number of our lifeguards asked to go to the hospital. Fortunately, they were quickly released and are fine.” After the first complaints, Universal continued normal operation of the park, but set out to identify which areas of the park were causing the issues. They quickly closed rides and other areas as they pinpointed the issue and eventually closed the entire park out of caution.

Universal goes on to say, “We have worked with OUC, outside electrical contractors and our own experts – and we now know the problem is specifically electrical. We have spent the hours and days since Sunday testing and re-testing our electrical system across the entire park. And we have made repairs and modifications to our electrical system. We believe this has resolved the issue.”

The statement, which was released late on June 5, also says that some attractions at Volcano Bay will remain closed while Universal continues their testing to make sure everything is okay, but they will be opened as soon as they can. OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, was at Volcano Bay the same day the statement was released, and Universal is working closely with them to make sure everyone is safe.

Universal states, “We know it is disturbing to feel any level of shock in a water park. We definitely understand and want you to know that the safety – and trust – of our guests and team members is vital to us. Everything we do is motivated by their safety. And that was the case on Sunday.”

Universal has concluded that the problem is resolved and the park is safe. We’ll update you if any more new is released in conjunction with this story.
