Universal Epic Universe is home to some groundbreaking theme park attractions (and restaurants… and shows… and queues!). Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is arguably one of the most innovative, jaw-dropping, and thrilling dark rides ever created; and for good reason. Today, we’re not talking about one of the many life-like animatronics depicting the beloved Universal Monsters. We’re showcasing the impressive creation found within Monsters Unchained’s queue, inside Frankenstein Manor.

Inside the queue, you’ll encounter eerie experiments, electrical contraptions, and preserved creatures. But one of the standout details is the sculpted figure of Frankenstein’s Monster, clearly inspired by Boris Karloff’s iconic performance in the original 1931 Frankenstein film.

When you first approach the Monster, you’re not sure if it’s a screen or enhanced with projections — it’s just that good. Whenever I walk through, I hope for a brief ride delay so I can camp out and stare at him just a little longer…

The sculpt is life-sized and highly detailed, featuring the signature flat head, heavy brow, sunken eyes, neck bolts, and stitched skin that Karloff made famous. The film’s makeup design, originally created by Jack Pierce, has become the definitive look of the Monster in pop culture. But this full-body figure featured in the Monsters Unchained queue was created by Mike Hill of Mike Hill Creations, a SFX makeup artist and sculptor.

Hill originally created this work of art back in 2015 — 10 years before Epic Universe’s opening. The details are just incredible; picking up every hair, suture, and decayed crevice of the Monster’s cadaver. It looks as though he’s been long entombed, only to be unearthed and set on display once more.

The piece was on display in galleries and Monsterpalooza years back, and, according to his website, will be featured in Hill’s upcoming short film The Prodigal Son. Additionally of note, Hill has contributed his works for Guillermo Del Toro’s Shape of Water and his upcoming Frankenstein adaptation.
Back to the Monster… somewhere along the way, Universal acquired the sculpt, and is now proudly displayed within the park’s premiere Universal Monsters attraction. He’s in an upright position, with an x-ray scanner moving along his body.

Though Universal’s Classic Monsters have been reimagined for Epic Universe, this sculpted tribute to Karloff serves as a respectful nod to the roots of horror cinema and the actor who helped define the genre. For longtime Universal fans, it’s a meaningful detail that bridges the studio’s horror legacy with its future in a beautifully haunting way.
Dark Universe is filled with classic horror history and lore.

Each time I visit, I find something new — like this other Karloff portrayal, the original Mummy, found inside Pretorius’ Scientific Oddities shop:
