Ranking HHN – Intellectual Properties
Halloween Horror Nights is rapidly approaching, so why not build the excitement with a little guessing game before the media preview of HHN25 tonight, including a first look inside a completed house? There are 5 intellectual property houses this year – The Walking Dead: The Living and the Dead, Freddy vs. Jason, Insidious, The Purge, and An American Werewolf in London. Here is my prediction of how the intellectual properties will rank from worst to best:
5. The Walking Dead: The Living and the Dead
Season 5 of The Walking Dead was the weakest of the series overall since Season 1, meaning there isn’t a lot of good source material to even work with. Since this whole countdown is ranking the houses based on their source material, that means you have to sadly be at the bottom. The good news is even the WORST HHN house is better than having no HHN ever, so you’re good regardless of how it goes.
4. The Purge
Is there anything bad to say about The Purge? Of course not. It isn’t the greatest horror/thriller series ever invented, but it also isn’t mediocre. The Purge and The Purge: Anarchy feature decent acting with intriguing and suspenseful plot lines. In fact, if it wasn’t for the other amazing IPs this year, this house might be even higher on the list. However, The Purge is a one-trick pony. People want to purge and kill you. The source material doesn’t leave a lot of room for creative freedom, besides creating new scenarios not seen in either of the movies.
3. Freddy vs. Jason
Please, don’t hate me too much for this one. A Nightmare on Elm Street is a horror classic by the late and great Wes Craven. Friday the 13th is right there a long with it. Freddy vs. Jason? Well, there are better horror movies out there, but are there any better ones featuring two slasher movie icons? If there is then I haven’t seen it yet. I still have mixed feelings about the film, but the film being transformed into a Halloween Horror Nights house has a ton of potential. Let’s just hope Kelly Rowland isn’t participating at all in this house…
2. Insidious
What!? Insidious is higher on the list than Freddy vs. Jason!? Again, this is about which houses will be best based solely on the movies or television series. Insidious was a good horror film. Insidious: Chapter 2 was a well-done, but inferior sequel. Insidious: Chapter 3… well, it had Dermot Mulroney! But seriously, Insidious was one of the better MAINSTREAM movies in the genre to be released in the past 5 years, and in my opinion, it was only outdone by the other James Wan masterpiece, The Conjuring. Remember, I’m talking mainstream horror films here. Calm down Babadook fans.
1. An American Werewolf in London
Did you really expect anything else to take the number one spot? The 2013 house based on Werewolf was so good that they could’ve made a movie about the house and it would’ve came in first place on this list. But seriously, the movie An American Werewolf in London blends spectacular effects with a fast-paced story, tons of jumping moments and a good deal of humor and is one of my favorite horror movies, ever. If anyone doubted how good An American Werewolf in London house could be the first time around the let me take a second to congratulate you on your achievement in stupidity. The movie is just too good to be bad at HHN.
