Will the Success of ‘Wicked’ Spur Universal To Build Oz?

Universal Orlando has already invested approximately $1 billion into the development of Epic Universe, a bold move that underscores their dedication to expanding and diversifying their attractions. Given this substantial commitment, it’s understandable that NBCUniversal, under Comcast, might hesitate to allocate additional significant resources to the Universal Destinations & Experiences division right now. However, the age-old adage “strike while the iron is hot” seems particularly relevant here. With Wicked making a splash at the box office and igniting cultural buzz, could now be the perfect moment for Universal to announce the creation of an Oz-themed land in one of its Orlando parks?

The numbers surrounding Wicked suggest it’s far from a fleeting success. The film achieved the third-largest opening weekend of the year, pulling in $114 million in ticket sales—just behind Deadpool & Wolverine ($211.4 million) and Inside Out 2 ($154.2 million). While ranking third may not immediately signal a franchise-launching phenomenon, a deeper look at the data reveals its potential staying power. The second weekend brought in $81.1 million, breaking records for the highest-ever second weekend box office, surpassing Incredibles 2 ($80.3 million) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ($55.5 million). Additionally, Wicked boasts an audience score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, an indicator of its strong resonance with viewers.

A combination of a robust opening weekend and exceptionally high audience reception often signals long-term box office success. Consider The Greatest Showman (2017): it debuted with a modest $8.8 million but eventually grossed $434 million worldwide, thanks to glowing word-of-mouth and a growing social media following. While Wicked is unlikely to follow the exact same trajectory, its continued momentum could make a strong case for Universal to capitalize on its cultural impact with a fully immersive theme park experience.

There’s evidence that Universal might already be exploring this idea. The recently launched temporary exhibit, The Wicked Experience, features costume replicas, themed meet and greets with Elphaba and Glinda, and a merchandise collection. These efforts suggest Universal is testing the waters to determine whether Wicked has the potential to sustain broader, more permanent attractions. Even Universal Studios Singapore temporarily transformed its New York-themed area with an Emerald City overlay, further hinting at the brand’s potential as a park expansion.

A fully realized Oz-themed land could provide Universal with a unique thematic opportunity. Imagine a signature attraction like Flight Over Oz, inspired by Disney’s Avatar: Flight of Passage, which could serve as a dynamic anchor for the area. Other immersive experiences might include a vibrant recreation of the Emerald City, interactive character encounters, and themed dining inspired by iconic elements from the land of Oz. But beyond brainstorming specific attractions, the real question is whether such an expansion would be a viable and strategic move for Universal Orlando.

There are, of course, challenges to consider. One potential hurdle is thematic redundancy. While the world of Wicked—with its focus on Shiz University and the Emerald City—differs significantly in tone and style from Hogwarts and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, both center around magical education. Universal would need to ensure that the two lands feel distinct enough to avoid thematic overlap.

Another concern is sustainability. Once Wicked: Part Two hits theaters, the main storyline will conclude. Could Universal justify dedicating an entire land to a franchise built on just two films? Without plans for spinoffs or additional expansions to the Wicked universe, there’s a risk that interest in such a land might wane over time, leaving Universal with a less relevant attraction as Hollywood’s cultural focus shifts elsewhere.

Despite these challenges, the opportunity might be too significant to ignore. If Wicked continues to dominate both culturally and financially, Universal could find it difficult to resist bringing the land of Oz to life. An Oz-themed land would give Universal a chance to differentiate itself further from competitors, offering guests a completely new, immersive experience while capitalizing on the success of a beloved story.

Timing will be crucial. With Wicked currently commanding widespread attention, Universal has a rare chance to align with a moment of cultural enthusiasm. Waiting too long could allow the opportunity to fade into Hollywood’s ever-changing landscape. By acting now, Universal could solidify its position as a leader in creating groundbreaking themed attractions while bringing the magic of Oz to life for generations of fans.
