A Brief History on H.R. Bloodengutz
The character debuted at Halloween Horror Nights 21 in 2011 as the host of the original haunted house “H.R. Bloodengutz Presents: Holidays of Horror.” The house was presented as the final broadcast of a late-night horror TV host who had completely lost his grip on reality.
According to HHN lore, H.R. Bloodengutz was originally an actor named Larry Kurtzberg. After his acting career faded, he took a job hosting a creature-feature television program called The Midnight Mayhem Horror Show on WKNB Channel 21 in Carey, Ohio. The show became popular, but as ratings declined, Kurtzberg became obsessed with the character and began demanding everyone call him H.R. Bloodengutz. When the station decided to cancel the show, he snapped, taking crew members hostage and broadcasting one final marathon of twisted holiday horror films.
The 2011 house featured murderous versions of holidays including Valentine’s Day, Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Guests moved through each “movie” while Bloodengutz appeared on vintage television screens introducing the next horrifying feature.
Although the house only appeared once, Bloodengutz returned as an Easter egg inside Welcome to SCarey: Horror in the Heartland during HHN 30 in 2021, keeping the character alive in the larger Carey, Ohio mythology. And now… he’s BACK headlining his own house!

We’re officially in HHN announcement season! H.R. Bloodengutz is the latest addition for this year’s 35th anniversary lineup at Universal Studios Florida, alongside Stranger Things, Sinners and Jack the Clown and Dr. Oddfellow’s return. Additional houses, scare zones and entertainment will be revealed in the coming weeks.
